Across West Virginia, faces in the rocky landscape can be seen—noses, mouths, and foreheads clear from great distances. These profiles appear lifeless, dormant, believed to only be personifications of the environment. However, these stone heads come to life if their names are spoken; unfortunately, these names are absent from human knowledge, as the faces are created by ancient bigfoot cultures and fae-who name and speak with the formations. In West Virginia, some Stone Heads are made by Leaping Devils and Stonemen using fae magic and rituals that give rock sentience. The faces are human-like, usually with protruding foreheads, flat noses, and jagged teeth. Many of these structures have fallen into ruin and are no longer discernible, whereas others have withered into nonexistence; still, new formations pop up from time to time in the wilderness. At the utterance of its name, the face rumbles to life, pebbles falling from loose ground and stone grinding against stone as eyes, mouth, and brows twitch. Its speech is rumbling, deep, like the tumble of rocks down a mountainside. Some of these beings can speak English, though most speak ‘Stone Speech’. When called, Stone Heads will converse with their summoner(s) until the next sunrise. Most seek these figures for their knowledge, as they possess all wisdom and insight the stones that comprise it have witnessed. Regardless of the questioner, the stone head will answer any probe truthfully and to the best of its understanding. As simple, magical beings, they are unable to lie or deceive. Though a neutral individual, Stone Heads may inadvertently cause danger; its movement and resounding voice may cause avalanches or large rocks to fall. With dawn’s light, the being falls back into deep slumber, awaiting the call of its name once more after a resting period of 300 days.
The most famous Stone Head in West Virginia is the “Old Man of the Canyon”, who can be seen on Route 19 and 21 near Chimney Corner, New River. Some believe seeing a familiar face in the stones signals approaching death.
