Wakened Children are greatly feared by others for their connection to and control of the paranormal. They are born with faces devoid of eyes and the top of their heads are covered in wrinkly, veiny skin. A child may be born as a No Eyes if these conditions are met: 1) the mother or father has been possessed by a paranormal entity once in their lives; 2) the baby is born in a location controlled by an eidola; 3) the baby is born between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.
A strange thing happens when a baby girl is born on a Tuesday to a family that has maternal, Tuesday-born lineages spanning four generations; the fifth, however, is considered an Unlucky Tuesday. These babes become possessed, eternally linked to a long-forgotten being; they share a body with this entity, who, aside from their unusual forms, display little signs of existence. Living within them, the being alters their genetic material and causes them to absorb, then destroy the luck of those around them.
AKA: Wakened Children, Seers
Wakened Children are greatly feared by others for their connection to and control of the paranormal. They are born with faces devoid of eyes and the top of their heads are covered in wrinkly, veiny skin; over four-fifths of No Eyes are born male.
A child may be born as a No Eyes if these conditions are met: 1) the mother or father has been possessed by a paranormal entity once in their lives; 2) the baby is born in a location controlled by an eidola; 3) the baby is born between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. Additionally, these rare individuals have the greatest chance of being born if they are the seventh son of a seventh son and if both parents have experienced possession. 1 Wakened Children are half human, half paranormal; after a possession, part of a paranormal being is left behind—a part that is passed on to offspring during reproduction.
As these youths grow and develop, their hair is kept long to cover facial abnormalities. Though they cannot see through traditional means, they have a supernatural sense that allows them to navigate without struggle. These halflings display no other physical oddities, but are much shorter on average than their peers; they also develop soft, soothing voices that send shivers down hearer’s spines. Ostracized by most of society, No Eyes may find fringe groups that accept their strange behavior and appearance.
In the past, Wakened Children were either hidden away or abandoned in the forest—as they were viewed as cursed, evil, or demonic beings. Even when lovingly cared for by their family, No Eyes cannot help but draw trouble. These halflings attract all nearby paranormal entities to them, almost as if they were an eidola. Weaker entities, like ghosts, fear No Eyes and do not stay near them for long once discovered. Stronger, more evil beings attempt to siphon Seers’ power or possess their bodies. While these halflings are fairly resistant to paranormal assaults/influences, stronger entities, like daemons, may be able to garner control; most of these kinds of entities seek Wakened Children to gain more permanent, corporeal bodies.
As No Eyes age, they develop a few supernatural abilities. First, from birth they can perceive every paranormal entity near them. Once they can speak, they freely converse with entities around them—sometimes helping them with their troubles or leading them astray, preventing harm. Once adolescence is reached, the halflings begin to master invisibility, then phasing through solid objects. Later into adulthood, some learn to successfully levitate A themselves or other objects. The longest-lived No Eyes traveled the world, ridding it of malicious, bothersome, paranormal creatures, spawning stories of their heroic deeds. Most shrug off lives of normality, instead looking for ways to use their unique talents.
Not all Wakened Children become benevolent individuals; some align themselves with evil entities in exchange for knowledge, new powers, or permission into the paranormal realm; these No Eyes are often betrayed by their partners, however. Other, non-malicious individuals may walk a similar path, but with benevolent or neutral entities; these halflings often feel more kinship with the paranormal than human communities. Some Seers shirk all of these routes, preferring to live solitary lives, feeling no sense of belonging anywhere in life.
Regardless of their personalities and choices, on average, No Eyes live very short lives; they are prone to illness and infection, having poor immune systems. Additionally, they have extremely sensitive stomachs and numerous allergies. Most of these halflings never make it to age five, and even fewer to adulthood. In some cases, families who know of their unique child’s health risks take them far from civilization—living self-sufficiently, driving to gather supplies alone, and never permitting them to leave the home if others are nearby. Historically, these living arrangements are not healthy to a No Eye’s mental health or self-image. Due to caretakers’ various precautions, some Wakened Children never converse with another human until they become adults, run away from home, or their parents pass away; these halflings usually have poor social skills, as they have only ever really befriended the paranormal—who share very little traits, habits, or customs with humanity.
No Eyes not only have powers that allow themselves to be altered but also the world around them. Animals touched by Wakened Children are able to sense paranormal entities, and those touching a No Eye are able to see and hear them as long as they are making contact with one another; this ‘sight’ applies to all paranormal entities, even those who do not wish to be seen (no paranormal entity can hide from No Eyes). The halflings are also able to create artificial eidolas or paranormal repellents, but they are only temporarily effective. Though it is undocumented, it is believed that the offspring of No Eyes may share some of their paranormal aspects, though to a lesser extent.
